Conversations with Jeri:
More About Color

Jeri finally whips her Lesson-3 pages into shape, and we continue to play with the background colors.

3/26, Jeri to Lehua:

Bad day at black rock, but here is what I have so far, I made the color changes you suggested but I now have Blue on my Home page and Grey on my tree page:

<HTML><HEAD>
<TITLE>Jeri Walsh's Home Page</TITLE></HEAD>
<BODY BGCOLOR="#AAaaFF">

OK, what did I do wrong?

Jeri

3/26, Lehua to Jeri:

Well done. The first page is perfect. The tree page, the original error has not yet been corrected, but it is mostly fine. The grey-that-should-be green, I think might be a function of your color setup -- my guess would be that you are at 256 colors, rather than 16million colors. This is good, because it will allow us to test our colors to work for a variety of setups. In the meantime, I will give you a better color. And... we are going to get to the FUN PART, which is to use an image.

Pause and Reflect: More on Colors

Let's start with correcting the old error in the tree page:

Take a look at your <BODY> statements. Notice that you have one at the end of the title line. But then, notice that you also have one way down, just before the end-HTML statement. Notice also that you don't have and end-body statement.

So:

  1. Get rid of the bad body statement by replacing it with the misplaced one at the bottom.

  2. Add the end-body (</BODY>>) right before the end-html.

Now we have:

<HTML><HEAD>
<TITLE>Jeri Walsh's Home Page</TITLE></HEAD><BODY BGCOLOR="#88aaaa">
Here is our Beautiful Tree of Hope.
To return to my home page:
<A HREF="index.htm">Click
here</A></BODY></HTML>

There! This is now perfect. Now, we're going to do one more thing. Although Netscape doesn't give a hoot about carriage returns (end-of-line) one way or another, it greatly helps the readability, especially when you're trying to figure out whether you've made a mistake. So, we're going to add some spacing, till it looks like follows:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Jeri Walsh's Home Page</TITLE>
</HEAD>

<BODY BGCOLOR="#88aaaa">
Here is our Beautiful Tree of Hope.
To return to my home page:
<A HREF="index.htm">Click here</A>
</BODY>
</HTML>

Now -- let's change to a better shade of green, which should show okay on your screen (let me know if it doesn't). Let's use "ccffcc", which should come out a pale mint-y color.

So, instead of:

<BODY BGCOLOR="#88aaaa">

change it to:

<BODY BGCOLOR="#ccffcc">
