Introduction to Background Color

(You can check out Conversations with Jeri to see how happy she is with her first success from Lesson 1.)  In Lesson 2, Jeri learns to jump from page to page, and begins to dress up her pages just a little.

Using Notepad (or WordPad), create a new htm file very similar to the first one we made in lesson one. Do not overlay index.htm -- we still need that for our home page; this will be a NEW page.  The new page should look like this:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Jeri's Tree Page</TITLE>
</HEAD>

<BODY>
Here is my beautiful tree.
</BODY>
</HTML>

Save this as jtree.htm.

Open the htm file you created in Lesson #1 (index.htm, your home page). Important: Open it via Notepad, not via Netscape. This means, you have to open Notepad and then choose it, because if you double-click on it from File Manager (or W95 Explorer), it will just show it in Netscape, which is not what we want (yet).

In our last episode, our home (index) page looked like this:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Jeri's Home Page</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
Hi, I'm Jeri from Arizona. Welcome to my home page. Please visit my other pages.
</BODY>
</HTML>

Add the following 2 lines, after the welcoming text:

To visit my tree:
<A HREF="jtree.htm">Click here</A>

You have now created a link. There are several types of links; this one is a link to a page within your own site. We'll talk about other types of links as we go along.

Your home page now looks like this:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Jeri's Home Page</TITLE>
</HEAD>

<BODY>
Hi, I'm Jeri. Welcome to my home page. Please visit my other pages.
To visit my tree:
<A HREF="jtree.htm">Click here</A>

</BODY>
</HTML>

Now, open the jtree.htm file again. Add the following lines after the existing text:

To return to my home page:
<A HREF="index.htm">Click here</A>

Your tree page now looks like this:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Jeri's Tree Page</TITLE>
</HEAD>

<BODY>
Here is my beautiful tree.
To return to my home page:
<A HREF="index.htm">Click here</A>
</BODY>
</HTML>

Background Color

Now, just for some fun, let's add some color. Change your <BODY> statement. Instead of just plain <BODY> change it to be:

<BODY BGCOLOR="#AAaaFF">

This should change the background color to a beautiful soft periwinkle.

Save the jtree.htm page.

From File Manager or Explorer, double-click on your index.htm file. This will bring up Netscape. Now you can page back and forth between your home page and your new sub-page.

When you've done this, let me know, and we'll continue making improvements.

Love & hugs,
Lehua
