After successfully creating her first web page, Jeri has a few questions and comments.

In the process, she also develops a very clear statement of her site's intent and audience.

Questions and Answers about Lesson 1

3/17/97, Lehua to Gene & Jeri:

>>I really like the voila part, makes it sound real simple, and I'm in to that (gg).<<

>>Should we tell her that she can just CUT and PASTE from your E-mail?<<

We could, but I would like her to have the physical experience of how easy it is. For me, that was very startling.

>>making a thumbnail and linking to a full picture<<

Excellent idea. I did that with the photo of the lehua bush on my site, figuring only the rare weirdo would really care enough to want to see a close-up.

>>decide on a purpose<<

Start simple. I.e., "to entertain", "to teach", "to give comfort." Or all of the above. That makes it much simpler.

Big hugs,
Lehua

3/17/97, Lehua to Jeri:

>>can somebody else make a page for me using my name??<<

Nope. You are the only person who can load stuff to your website area.

But... have you tried the first exercise? Surely it stunned you with how easy this is?

>>maybe we just start with "one page" with links to let people hop down farther on the page, what do you think?<<

Nope, it will be easier if you do it modular from the start, and it doesn't take any extra effort.

>>Say, somewhere along the line I would like to put in my genealogy info, could it be done in such a way that it would not interfere with with the loading??<<

IF you make it modular to start with, then adding such things is easy as falling off a log.

>>How exactly will people here on the forum access the page? Can anyone who has Compuserve access find it and how simple for them will it be?... is it a real "internet" homepage or just something here on Compuserve?<<

It will be a real internet homepage, that anyone in the world can see. I get emails from people all over the world. As we move along in our lessons I will teach you about "registering" a website, which makes it very easy for people to find you. And of course, everyone in the forum will know how to find you.

But, in the meantime, DO THE FIRST PIECE!!! It will make you much more confident.

Love and soothing, reassuring hugs,
Lehua

>> We could, but I would like her to have the physical experience of how easy it is. For me, that was very startling. <<

Hmmm, why do you sound like my "doctors" now (ggg), they all want me to "experience" it for myself!! OK, OK, I'll go find that file you told me to--any idea "where" it might be (gg).

>>>decide on a purpose<< Start simple. I.e., "to entertain", "to teach", "to give comfort." Or all of the above. That makes it much simpler. <<

Very good idea, I knew someone would help me out (gg). To me the main goal is to give comfort and hope! I want everyone out there fighting the battle that they are not forgotten. To me it will be like have a constant prayer chain going as people come and look and maybe say a prayer for those on the list, survivors and victims. I'm a very visual type person and seeing something helps me understand!

OK, who hid that dang file??????????????

Jeri (Searching endlessly through compuserve, maybe never to be seen again)

3/17/97, Jeri to Lehua:

>> But, in the meantime, DO THE FIRST PIECE!!! It will make you much more confident. <<

Yes, MOM!!!!!!!! I'll go see if I can find that elusive file you're talking about (gg). But if I don't know what forum it's in do I have to search them all one at a time?? Gee, I wonder if Gene has done his "assignment" yet?? (VBG)

Jeri (Staying after School--AGAIN!!!)

3/17/97, Jeri to Lehua:

>> I think the whole reason you're so enthused about the M&M duelling is to avoid doing your first HTML exercise!!!! I shall SNATCH YOUR M&M's AWAY! <<

I'm laughing like crazy, because "YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!!!"

Dang no rest for the wicked, but to take away my M&Ms is downright "abuse" (gg).

Jeri (Eating only the W's)

3/17/97, Lehua to Jeri:

>>You mean Windows "notepad"??<<
Yup. Super easy.

>>I have a program in my FOWIN Genealogy program that says I can make a web page with it, hmmm maybe I should look at it???<<
You can, but you might end up with a deeper understanding if you plod thru it yourself the first time. Also, you will get a better appreciation for how easy it is.

>>that elusive file you're talking about<<
The file is just the skeletal page that I'm having you create using Notepad, per my previous message. Once you write that and save it, and take a look at it under Netscape, we'll be ready for you to start adding stuff.

Love & hugs,
   Lehua

3/17/97, Lehua to Jeri:

>>main goal is to give comfort and hope!<<

Hear hear! I'll drink to that, especially since it's St. Patty's. Seriously, that's the clearest statement I've ever heard from anyone starting out to do a site, much clearer than my own, it sounds like you've got exactly what you need to go forward.

Love & hugs,
Lehua
