Spam musubi... YESSSSS!! How correct, to find such a staple in every corner store. Hawai'ians have quite a fondness for spam, even having whole cookbooks about it. If you see an entry in a menu saying "Hawai'ian breakfast," it might mean several things, but there's a high likelihood that we're talking spam-and-rice. As with so many things, we've mutated musubi, the traditional rice ball wrapped in seaweed, to have a nice slice of spam in place of raw fish. |
I was relieved like a thirsty man in the desert to find that Poi Bowl was still in Ala Moana Center, though in a different place. I promptly inhaled a plate of laulau, lomi salmon and, of course... rice! There are so many great eating places I didn't get to visit, but thank goodness we made it to Liliha Bakery. Jim & Barb were supposed to pick us up at the Moana on wedding day, but it turned out to be the day of the Kamehameha Day parade, so there was no way they could have gotten to Waikiki. So David and I went early to Liliha Bakery and enjoyed their linquiça and eggs and fine bread while we waited. The best part was listening to the surrounding conversations -- ahh, my own language. |
